How Botox Works
Botox (botulinum toxin) is a bacterium that blocks the release of acetylcholine, the substance responsible for transmitting electrical impulses that elicit muscle contraction. By injecting it into specific muscles, it prevents them from moving and reduces the formation of lines or wrinkles.
Although botox is often associated with facial cosmetics, it has been used in medicine safely and effectively for the treatment of strabismus (cross-eye) and blepharospasm (lid spasm) since the eighties. |
